How to make a mood board

Our new Claypaint swatches are the perfect addition to your interior design mood board!

Why should I create a mood board when decorating?

Creating a mood board is an amazing way to get inspired and start planning your next project. From colour schemes to patterns and textures. Mood boards can be helpful to create a clear idea of what your space can look like before you start shopping around.

Begin your mood board by finding images of spaces that you can see yourself living in and that inspire you. Pinterest is an amazing resource for creating mood boards and for getting interior design inspiration, check out our Pinterest page for even more interior design and decorating inspiration for all different types of spaces.

Collect images of furniture, décor, and accessories that you like as well as paint and fabric swatches. Once you’ve brought all these together, it’s time to start making your mood board.

mood board

Step 1: Choose a core colour

The first step to creating the perfect mood board to help you choose how to decorate your home is through choosing a core colour.

Usually when you choose to decorate your home, you will have a colour in mind which can then be narrowed down to specific paint shades.

Our new Claypaint colour swatches are an amazing way to see what your walls can look like before committing to painting your walls.

Step 2: Find your dream home images

Adding images of what your dream home would look like into your mood board often keeps you on track of your vision.

It is easy to become overwhelmed with décor ideas, so choosing one or two images that you can imagine being your own home and adding them to your mood board is the best way to go.

Step 3: Layer

When creating a mood board layering is your best friend. It allows you to see which fabrics work the best with which colours etc.

Don’t be afraid to pair things together that you don’t think go, because that’s the whole point of a mood board. Experimenting!

Always keep your dream home images at the forefront of your board, just so you can reference as you go along.

Step 4: Finishing touches

All you have left to do now is add any finishing touches, including any accent colours, fabrics, or furniture pieces to your board.

And that is it. It was that easy! You now have a complete plan of exactly what your home will look like, and even feel like.

If you’ve created an interior design mood board using our Claypaint colour swatches make sure to post them on Instagram and use the hashtag #EarthbornByMe

As the weather gets colder and the seasons change, light the fire and get cosy with our beautiful berry shades.

We’ve picked out our favourite berry paint shades and paired them with other colours from our range so you can create an autumnal oasis in your home.

Raspberry Red with Lady Bug

Pair our gorgeous raspberry shade ‘Lady Bug‘ with a light, gentle tone like ‘Peach Baby‘ to create a cosy, autumnal ambiance within your home. Accessorise with dark furnishings to make the deep red in Lady Bug stand out.

Our richly toned burgundy is highly versatile. Lady Bug would impress in all property styles, from contemporary kitchens to stately drawing rooms.

Beautiful Blueberry with Trumpet

There is no shade better matched to a Blueberry than Trumpet! Pair Trumpet with ‘Cricket‘, the softest green, to make the purple tones in Trumpet pop. Depending on what is paired with Trumpet, the undertones of purple can create a completely different atmosphere in the room.

Pairing Trumpet with a green shade like Cricket creates a youthful, fun feeling. Whereas painting an entire room in Trumpet and accessorising with pops of colour can create a more gothic look.

All-round Autumnal with Nutkin

Autumnal warmth rings through with the reddish-brown tones of Nutkin, from the falling leaves to the berries on the trees. Bringing a feeling of muted warmth into your home is done beautifully with Nutkin.

This hue, created in collaboration with Country Homes and Interiors, is perfectly paired with Donkey Ride, decorate with pops of colour like mustard yellow to bring the room together.

We’d love to see your very berry projects, so don’t forget to tag us on social media #EarthbornByMe

October is a month of transformation. The leaves become a deep golden brown, the nights draw in and there’s a chill in the air… To celebrate the new season, we’ve chosen to switch it up with the deep, dark shade of Hidey-Hole.

Hidey-Hole allows you to take your home on its own journey of transformation – seamlessly transitioning from the summer to the autumn, and on into winter. With its warm charcoal tones, it provides the perfect neutral backdrop for bold colours: watch vibrant autumnal tones, like orange and red, pop against Hidey-Hole’s grey.

We recommend pairing Hidey-Hole with Flower Pot or Trilby for a truly autumnal vibe.

Furthermore – Hidey-Hole will add real drama to your seasonal celebrations. Whether it be Halloween fright nights, Bonfire Night get-togethers or Christmas dinner parties, the elegance and versatility of this deep grey is second to none.

So, if you want to create your own cosy cocoon this autumn, Hidey-Hole is the perfect choice. It will envelop your home and add a welcome depth – carrying you through the colder half of the year with a comforting warmth.

Order a paint swatch of Hidey-Hole here and head to our Instagram or Pinterest channels for even more inspiration on how to switch it up!

To celebrate the launch of our new colour swatches, we’re taking a look at some of our favourite colours to help you switch up your home with the help of a swatch!

Paw Print is the perfect shade when opting for a modern neutral colour palette, those deliciously soothing hues that enhance the feeling of light in a room whilst at the same time adding warmth and relaxed sophistication.

Earthborn Paw Print is a soft mushroom paint colour, the perfect neutral shade for any room

One of our most beloved of these neutral paint colours is Paw Print, a pale mushroom tone that’s been a consistently best-selling paint colour ever since it first graced our colour card. It’s not hard to see why. This beautifully warming colour is light enough not to impose but with a gentle mushroomy-taupe hue that flatters any room.

A surprisingly complex shade. Paw Print carefully balances warm pinkish-red undertones with a natural, soft beige-brown. Resulting in a colour that is affected by light and shade. This subtly alters its colour quality depending on the time of day and direction of light.

For a truly calm and casual space, pair Paw Print with similar neutral and white tones: Muddy Boots, Donkey Ride and Marbles.

Why not test one of our brand-new paint swatches! Each swatch has been individually painted with real Earthborn Claypaint so you know exactly what you’re getting when you order. Place the swatches around the room to see how the light affects the colour at different times throughout the day.

Order a paint swatch of Paw Print here and head to our Instagram or Pinterest channels for even more inspiration on how to switch it up!

To celebrate the launch of our new colour swatches, we’re taking a look at some of our favourite colours to help you switch up your home with the help of a swatch!

Switch it up with Delilah, our fun loving (yet sophisticated) shade of 1950’s inspired pink!

Earthborn Colour of the Month Delilah

Cheer up drab spaces with this joyful dose of colour. A warm sunshine shade, Delilah sits somewhere between coral and pink. Made from a careful balance of orange and purple undertones, this sublime pink paint colour simply oozes personality in all room types!

Smaller spaces are the ideal way to dip your toes into bolder colour choices like Delilah. Try it in a small bathroom (like we have done!) for a glamorous ‘powder room’ vibe. In bedrooms and even kitchens, Delilah will create a warm, cheerful atmosphere.

In south facing rooms, the glowing apricot tones of Delilah will bathe your space in a delicious golden hue, whilst North facing rooms – with their slightly cooler light – will enhance the delicate pinky-purple undertones of this beautiful shade.

To celebrate the launch of our new colour swatches, we’re taking a look at some of our favourite colours to help you switch up your home with the help of a swatch!

Our darkest midnight blue

Toy Soldier is a highly pigmented, opulent paint colour. It’s our deepest blue, made up from blue and black undertones to create a rich, dramatic shade.

Toy Soldier by Earthborn is a deep midnight blue paint colour

Using Toy Soldier in your home

Dark paint colours, especially those with a warm blue, green or black undertone like Toy Soldier, are surprisingly easy to live with. Because it’s a highly adaptable shade, it can be used to create a dramatic, fun or intimate atmosphere in almost any room, depending on how you decide to use it.

If you don’t want to go dark in your whole room, why not use Toy Soldier as a feature wall in living or dining rooms? Adding interest and sophistication to a space, it’s perfect on a chimney breast.

Due to its depth of colour, Toy Soldier is a fantastic backdrop to art or photography – the dark blue background helps to make the most of your artwork and allows it to really sing! Just look at interior stylist and lecturer Katie Seller’s bedroom to see how Toy Soldier added a dramatic yet easy going touch.

Stylist Katie Frade used Toy Soldier to add sophistication to her bedroom

Alternatively, Toy Soldier is one of our absolute favourite Earthborn shades for painting furniture. In neutral or light grey rooms, a piece of furniture painted with a pop of Toy Soldier will add fun and personality to your room! Click here to buy Eco Chic furniture paint in Toy Soldier.

Pairing colours with Toy Soldier

Toy Soldier is surprisingly versatile and can be used as part of a variety of colour schemes. It acts as an alternative to dark grey in a monochrome colour palette, and adds a bold touch to white and off white walls, as above.

However we think this deep midnight blue comes into its own when paired with other blues, jewel greens and rich earthy reds for a truly dramatic look! Try it with Delilah, Cricket or The Lido for a true ‘pop’!

Order a paint swatch of Toy Soldier here and head to our Instagram or Pinterest channels for even more inspiration on how to switch it up!

What does your star sign say about your personal colour palette? Colour affects your mood and each zodiac sign has its own power colour as well as colours that can invigorate or create a calming environment depending on traits associated with that star sign.

We’ve analysed zodiac traits to assess how they should influence your design decisions when decorating different spaces in your home.

The best paint colours for your home according to your star sign

Earth Signs

Earth signs – Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn – are signs associated with practical and intellectual traits. Appeal to these characteristics with a pared back décor using a nature inspired colour palette.

Taurus: 20th April – 20th May

For people born under the Taurus sign, shades of greens and blues like Grassy or Polka Dot, should be incorporated into their homes to reflect their grounded and trustworthy nature – both attributes are commonly linked to this dependable earth sign. They also love to treat themselves and like the finer things in life, so a colour such as Lily Lily Rose can bring a touch of subtle luxury to their surroundings.

Virgo: 23rd August – 22nd September

Virgos are often connected to organisation and methodical thinking. Create well-thought-out, ordered spaces for Virgos to thrive in with soft greens like Faerie. This pairs nicely with Virgos power colour of brown, choosing shades such as Muddy Boots or Donkey Ride to create a grounding backdrop inspired by nature.

Capricorn: 22nd December – 20th January

Much like the Taurus zodiac sign, Capricorns are associated with practical traits. Avoid burnt oranges and reds and, instead, incorporate timeless and adaptable colours like Up Up Away or Seagull, combined with Hippo Hooray to reflect their power colour of charcoal grey, or Hidey-Hole for a more striking look.

Water Signs

Water signs – Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces – tend to be emotional and highly intuitive making them extremely sensitive to their surroundings. Use colour in different places throughout the home to help restore their energy or help create a calming environment.

Cancer: 21st June – 22nd of July

As a compassionate sign, Cancer’s should feel nurtured in their home. Their personal space should appeal to their sensitive natures with non-threatening tones of pinks and peaches like Ballet Shoe and Peach Baby.

Scorpio: 23rd October – 21st November

Scorpio’s are brave and loyal with lots of ambition. Speak to these traits by incorporating small elements of reds, like Lady Bug into their room, or a dark colour such as Hidey-Hole to reflect their power colour of black. Be careful to avoid over-saturating the room with these rich colours which can overstimulate Scorpio’s senses.

Pisces: 19th February – 20th March

Similar in many ways to Cancers, Pisces are emotionally aware individuals with a creative side. Speak to their imaginative nature by painting murals in muted tones of blues and greens like Bo Peep and Fiddlesticks. Add pops of colour such as Milk Jug to help them restore their energy.

Fire Signs

The fire signs, made up of Aries, Leos and Sagittarius’, are courageous and creative individuals. Bold colours reflect fire sign’s brave nature, while softer tones and textures will help to soothe their fiery side.

Aries: 21st March – 19th April

Those who fall under Aries are confident and daring individuals who love adventure and enjoy being independent.

The Aries power colour is red, so stimulate creative Aries’ minds with murals or a feature wall painted in an energetic red like Can-Can or a roasted reddish-brown such as Nutkin. These colours are ideal in a working from home office space or living room.

Leo: 23rd July – 22nd August

Represented by the brave lion, Leos are the natural born leaders of the zodiac calendar with their power colour being orange. Give a subtle nod to this using colours like Freckle or Flower Pot to highlight architectural features or upcycle furniture pieces in the home. Alternatively, focus their minds with low wavelength colours like blues and greens.

Sagittarius: 22nd November – 21st December

Sagittarians are loyal and compassionate. They’re a sociable bunch and love to go on adventures. Their power colour is purple, try using shades like Inglenook and Dried Petals in places where you want to work, create and think. Otherwise, softer colours such as Paw Print and Lily Lily Rose can help nurture Sagittarius’ and encourage them to pause and take a breath.

Air Signs

Air signs – Geminis, Libras and Aquarius – respond well to balance. Their intellectual minds like soothing colour palettes combined with bolder colours to invigorate.

Gemini: 21st May – 20th June

Symbolised by celestial twins, Geminis have two sides to their personality, so a palette that talks to their playful personality while nurturing their mellow side will help them thrive. Their ideal colour scheme will be made up of beiges and ivories like White Clay and Hopscotch, paired with a pop of Jemima or Daisy Chain to represent their power colour yellow.

Libra: 23rd September – 22nd October

Libras are symbolised by the scales of justice, associating them with balance and harmony. This popular zodiac sign calls for order in their life, making symmetry and balance essential in Libra’s homes. A pale blue, like Shallows, combined with a serene pink (their power colour) such as Cupcake will create a harmonious space.

Aquarius: 20th January – 18th of February

As the final air sign, Aquarius’ minds are innovative, progressive and intelligent. Feed innovation with invigorating hues of blue like Skipper or Toy Soldier. Use airy blues such as Bo Peep, Teacup or Gingham to help calm and centre their thoughts.

All parents know that a regular bedtime routine is the most important part of your child’s sleep health. But have you also considered the importance of a sensory sensitive bedroom design?

Previously, we gave you tips on how to create a sensory sensitive bedroom, we also highlighted that the colour scheme used is pivotal to creating a calming environment.

A sensory sensitive colour scheme is believed to be beneficial to all children and even adults when used in interior design. By introducing sensory sensitive colours into your home, you can create a space which is relaxing and comforting for both you and your little one.

To help, we have picked out 5 calming colour schemes which are perfect for a sensory sensitive bedroom or nursery.

Pastel pinks & lilacs

Pastel shades are easy on the eyes and considered to be low arousal colours, meaning that they aren’t distracting, particularly to those with sensory processing difficulties. Using different hues of pale pinks and lilacs can promote feelings of calmness, which when used in a nursery can help to soothe your little one.

Left: Cupcake. Right: Lily Lily Rose.

To incorporate these colours into a scheme, why not try our pastel pink Cupcake, a contemporary and sweet pink that is subtle enough to work in any room. It looks lovely alongside Lily Lily Rose (our 2022 Colour of the Year), a pastel lilac, that blends different shades of pink, lilac and grey together to form a beautiful, tranquil colour. These colours used together will create a nursery that feels like one big comfort blanket, helping little ones to feel safe and relaxed.

Pastel blues & greens

Continuing with pastel colours, softer shades of green and blue are also considered to create feelings of calm and peacefulness.

Left: Bo Peep. Right: Fiddlesticks.

Bo Peep is our cotton wool soft, palest blue. An excellent colour choice for nurseries, that will not look out of place in bedrooms as little one grows… meaning less decorating! Fiddlesticks is one of our pastel greens that is refreshing and inviting. It will help to quieten busy minds and promote positive energy. Introducing greens and blues into your scheme will create a calm oasis perfect for children and adults alike.

Creams

Creams are perfect for a sensory sensitive nursery. Neutral in colour, creams are not distracting and therefore perfect for creating a comforting space.

Creams are highly versatile and remain firm favourites when it comes to decorating. Maybe Maggie is our take on the classic colour ‘magnolia’ and is a safe choice for a sensory sensitive nursery working well in any room, in any light. The slight warmth to this neutral makes it easy on the eyes and provides the perfect backdrop to any space.

Earthy neutrals

Like creams, all neutrals are perfect for a sensory sensitive nursery, including greys, beige, and tan hues. White, however, should be avoided as it can appear too bright, cold and overwhelming in certain lights.

Left: Crocky Road. Right: Little Rascal.

If you’re thinking of using grey, consider Nellie, which we think may quite possibly be the perfect grey! Alternatively, why not try Crocky Road, a natural beige with the faintest of green undertones or Little Rascal a richer biscuity grown-up shade, both of which are ideally suited to sensory sensitive nursery.

Designing a unisex, gender neutral nursery

There are so many reasons to choose a gender neutral nursery design. Whether you aren’t finding out the sex of your baby until birth, you want to break away from the typical gendered colours, or you just prefer gender neutral design. We’ve rounded up five colour schemes to help you decorate the perfect nursery!

1. Keep it neutral

Sticking to neutrals can be a life saver when your children are still growing. A neutral colour scheme allows you to easily change the accent colours without needing to repaint the walls as your children get older.

Neutral décor is also an amazing way to give your growing child the opportunity to develop their own style and preferences of colours they like and dislike. As your little one grows they can have the creative freedom to choose accessories and other décor to make their space full of things they love!

You can’t go wrong with a neutral wall colour, especially in a toddlers bedroom! Children can often become overstimulated by colour, so picking a neutral shade like Crocky Road like Louise Roe has for her toddler’s bedroom (left image below) is an amazing way to keep a child’s room fun whilst still incorporating neutrals. Neutrals are also ideal when creating a sensory friendly bedroom, to create a calming environment.

2. Playful accent colours

Rainbow colours appeal to lots of babies and young children, and incorporating them into their bedroom is a great way for them to learn colour names. Whether bright or pastel toned, painting the wall white, neutral or light grey allows you add pops of colour through textiles, prints and furniture. Below right, we’ve painted the walls in our light, creamy shade Sandy Castle, with shelves painted in Kissing Gate. It’s a perfect base for colourful accessories!

 3. Fun wall art

A perfect way to make your child’s room more exciting is through wall art. There are so many different options when it comes to wall art, so the world (or wall) is your oyster!

A nursery can be the perfect place to unleash a bit of colour into your home. The design below left is by @_ohhellojo_ featuring our gorgeously mellow yellow, Humpty Dumpty and our warm orange, Freckle. But if you are looking to keep more neutral tones throughout your home, @thegreeneyedgirl (below right) has also added a fun touch of Humpty Dumpty against a beautiful backdrop of Feather Pillow.

4. Embrace the rainbow

Why should you have to choose between one or two colours? Why not choose them all! Having a multicoloured room will allow your child to learn which colours they love and which colours they could live without. Below left shows a child’s room painted in ‘Hippo Hooray‘ and our beautiful yellow ‘Daisy Chain‘. Mixed with accents of all different colours, a colourful room is the perfect way to teach your child not to be afraid of colour!

5. Go green

Green is such a popular shade at the moment for any room in the house. Green can be light and soothing, like our softly toned Gregory’s Den, or deep and luxurious like Hobby Wood, which makes it the perfect shade for a gender-neutral bedroom. We love how Joey Kendal Brown has decorated her son’s bedroom (below right) in Secret Room, an earthy shade that would appeal equally to girls and boys décor.

Imagine sitting on a golden beach in Ibiza watching the sun go down. The sky is awash with shades of pinks and oranges which all come together to rest on the horizon of the glistening blue Mediterranean Sea. Ibiza’s sunsets are famous, and for good reason, so we’re here to help you recreate this moment at home using paint colours to prolong that holiday feeling.

Colour Palette

To achieve that glowing Mediterranean sunset at home, opt for scorched oranges, burnt reds and fiery pinks coupled with vibrant blues that have a complementary warm undertone and represent the beautiful blue sea.

For a contemporary scheme keep décor light and airy by choosing a white base (we recommend Flutterby) then layer with elements of pastel hues based on this colour palette – pale peach, pinks and blues (like Peach Baby, Cupcake and Bo Peep) go well with our paint colour combo below.

Paint

Flower Pot, Polka Dot and Freckle are earthy tones that work beautifully together to help replicate the essence of an Ibizan sunset. (Side note – Flower Pot and Freckle are naturally occurring clay colours free from colourants!)

Synonymous with terracotta, Flower Pot adds a warm glow to any room, with its orange tones bringing the heat – perfect when designing an Ibiza themed interior.

Continuing the warm theme, orange hues such as Freckle radiate cheerful, positive energy into your home. Consider painting a feature wall in your bedroom to help kick start your day with a ray of sunshine.

Reminiscent of the Mediterranean Sea, Polka Dot is our easy going yet sophisticated blue. This colour is perfect to highlight wooden accents such as tables, door frames and skirting using Eggshell No.17. The warm undertones make it the perfect pairing when used with both Flower Pot and Freckle.

Décor

For a truly Ibiza sunset inspired interior, earthy materials should be incorporated into the space. Think wood, stone and natural materials as key to providing the perfect backdrop to your sunset scheme.

Be sure to incorporate elements such as pampas and seagrass into accessories like baskets and light fixtures.

Top everything off with some chic boho details like a macramé wall hanging and pom-pom accessories.

We’d love to see your holiday inspired projects, so don’t forget to tag us on social media #EarthbornByMe
