Bold Entrance

When you enter the Art Hostel you are instantly greeted by our brightest yellow Daisy Chain in the reception. Daisy Chain is used on each wall (ceiling included) allowing the afternoon light to bounce around the space. Featuring the original checkered floor tiles, this playful combination makes a statement that is bound to make you smile.

Warm Gathering

Flower Pot is used to create a warm, inviting social space behind the reception area. This colour perfectly complements the wooden accents of the area, such as the repurposed gym flooring and shelving unit partition.

Playful Stripes

Moving into the hallway, the playful colour schemes continue. Alternating stripes of colour that include Bo Peep, Lemony and Muddy Boots work well together due to Earthborn’s natural earthy palette. To keep this bold scheme coherent throughout the building, Earthborn Eggshell No.17 in Polka Dot is used on all skirting, window, and door frames. Polka Dot is the perfect blue shade that really does go with everything!

The Common(ing)

Upstairs on the first floor ‘The Common(ing)’ room was created by artists Sarah Li, Edwin Li and Lady Kit. Designed to be a room dedicated to “togetherness” (you can read more behind the trio’s inspiration here) it features our colour Secret Room. Painted on both walls and ceiling, it’s the perfect green next to the reclaimed wood furniture, creating a calm oasis that envelops you.

The Rainbow Room

The green theme continues into the next room “The Rainbow Lodge” which is an 8-bed dorm designed by VIDA’s nomadic lifestyle. Drawing you into the room a rainbow on the door, spills through on to the wall and ceiling before finishing at a large window. The clean flowing lines perfectly showcase our delicious array of greens including Gregory’s Den, Sunday Stroll, Grassy and Hobgoblin with White Clay as the perfect neutral base. Finished off with reclaimed Tiffany style lamps, wood furniture and lots of happy plants, this room is the ultimate cosy escape.

Snowstorm Collection

Finally, room “Snowstorm Collection” is a smaller private double room designed by artists Nelson & Woodward. The artists wanted to celebrate Sponsors Mick Ward & Gill Crawshaws shared travels together by displaying a collection of snowglobes they had collected from around the world when ‘travel was reasonably accessible and cheap’. The duo used our deep midnight blue Toy Soldier as the backdrop for a large earth headboard to echo the depths of space. In contrast to the blue, pops of burnt orange are scattered around the room for a space that is fun and bold.

The new hostel was opened in February 2022 in the ‘cool’ neighbourhood of Magbate. The team at the Art Hostel needed paint for their incredible artists to use in designing 12 truly unique rooms, that was eco friendly and suited the needs of the 19th century building. Hannah who works at the Art Hostel said ‘We approached Earthborn because of their highly recognised eco credentials and their breathable Claypaint. We wanted to collaborate with a paint company that cares about their carbon footprint and would also suit the needs of such an old building’.

We asked Hannah how the artists found using our paint? She advised ‘The artists found Earthborn’s Claypaint to be a refreshing change from normal paints! There was zero smell, the coverage was amazing and Claypaint has a beautiful palette of coolers for our artists to work with’.

Of course, we needed to know whether Hannah and the artists had any favourite colours. ‘I am a sucker for pastel colours, so immediately I loved Peach Baby and Freckle. All our artists absolutely loved the green colours including Secret Room, Sunday Stroll and Gregorys Den’.

Finally, we wanted to know whether Hannah and the artists would use Earthborn again? ‘100% We highly recommend anyone to try Earthborn paint, you won’t be disappointed. I know that Jon, the Director of East Street Arts has already said he will be using Earthborn Claypaint in his basement!’.

The newly formulated Bonding Primer can be used alongside Silicate Masonry Paint for exterior masonry surfaces that do not need to breathe. This means that our 48 beautiful shades can be used on all buildings. It is available in 2.5L and 5L tins.

What makes Bonding Primer different from Silicate Primer?

Our original breathable Silicate Primer is designed to be used on bare porous mineral-based surfaces such as lime render, stone, masonry, concrete, pebbledash, and plaster. It forms a chemical bond with a porous surface and becomes part of the wall. It cannot form this bond on a pre-painted masonry wall. Bonding Primer provides a mechanical bond between a ‘sealed’ wall and the paint, which allows Silicate Masonry Paint to ‘stick’ to the pre painted surface.

How durable is Bonding Primer?

The Bonding Primer and Silicate Masonry Paint have a similar durability to other masonry paints of around 5-6 years depending on where the property is located.

Can I use the Bonding Primer alongside Silicate Primer for areas of paint I have been unable to remove?

Yes! The best way to address this is to spot prime the patches where the previous paint cannot be removed with Bonding Primer. (Please be aware these patches will not be breathable). Then prime the rest of the unpainted area with Silicate Primer. For the second coat apply a mixture of 20% Silicate Primer and 80% Silicate Masonry Paint over the whole area. Make sure to include the areas that have been spot primed. Then finish with a final coat of Silicate Masonry Paint.

But first, let us take you back to July last year when our Earth Collection launched. Comprising 5 beautiful paint colours, our new shades were inspired by elements from nature.

At the time, we were concerned about throwing away our remaining colour cards unnecessarily. So we created a simple bookmark displaying real painted swatches of our five new colours, which slotted neatly inside our existing cards.

To reduce waste, we decided to wait a while before incorporating our new shades into our colour card. This also gave us the opportunity to update our colour card design (featuring a glorious new colour!) and enhance our eco credentials too. Our brand new colour card is now 100% recyclable, including the paint chips and adhesive too! And as always, our new colour card is painted in real Claypaint, and displays our other finishes as well.
