North-facing rooms can be some of the trickiest to decorate. Colours that would usually appear fresh and bright can look duller in these areas of the home. So how do you lighten a north facing room?

Firstly, you could embrace the dark, cosy feel of the space and paint your room in a deep, cocooning shade. After all, no matter what paint colour you choose, the room is still going to face north! Warm, jewel-like shades are especially perfect for north facing rooms (check out this post for more ideas).

But sometimes we crave a bright, open feel, which is best achieved with a light paint colour and some clever tricks. If you’re keen to lighten your north facing room, then check out these simple suggestions:

  1. 1. Don’t just opt for brilliant white

Sounds strange, but picking the brightest, whitest paint shade won’t necessarily help your north facing room feel any lighter or more inviting. That’s because the high level of titanium dioxide used to make white paint appear really bright can sometimes cast an almost blue-ish tone. In north facing rooms this blue tone can appear cold and stark, so it’s best to steer clear of pure brilliant white.

  1. 2. Choose a paint colour with a warm undertone

Off white and neutral paint colours with a subtle yellow or red undertone will add warmth to a space. Colours like Sandy Castle or Marbles carry a warmth that makes them perfect for north facing rooms. Check out this blogpost for more of our favourite neutral paint colours for north facing rooms, or take a look at our online Colour Guide.

  1. 3. Reflect the light

Mirrors are one of the simplest ways to make small rooms appear larger. So if you have a north facing space that feels dark and cave-like, use mirrors to lighten the room. For maximum effect, try situating mirrors adjacent to a light source such as a window or lamp.

  1. 4. Think about your ceiling and trims

The ceiling and woodwork colour can play a large part in the ambience of your space. North facing rooms often benefit from a cohesive approach, especially if your walls are painted in a light shade. By painting the skirting boards and ceilings in the same colour, you can achieve a seamless, airy feel. If you have a low ceiling with dark beams, we have some simple ideas on how to lighten wood beams here.

  1. 5. Opt for lightest shades by a window

Painting your interior window frame in a pale colour can help reflect light into the room, even if your walls are a different shade. It doesn’t need to be white, but a warm neutral colour will help to bounce the light around the room.

Warm, off-white and neutral paint colours are perfect for north facing rooms

  1. 6. Consider your furniture

Dark coloured furniture can contribute to the gloomy feeling of north facing rooms. Light woods and furniture painted in pale colours will help counter this – our Eco Chic is perfect if you fancy giving your dark furniture a lift! To help lighten your space further, choose furniture with tall legs (so you can still see the floor) as this will create the illusion of more space, which can in turn make the room feel lighter.

  1. 7. Get your lighting right

Last but not least, having the right kind of lighting can make the world of difference to dark rooms. Some artificial light feels cold and stark in north facing light, but likewise choosing a bulb that is too yellow can make a room feel heavy. A soft natural light, and in particular daylight bulbs, will help maximise light in your north facing room. A variety of lamps will also help to create pools of ambient lighting.

Painting furniture is an easy and inexpensive way to give your favourite pieces (or some unloved ones!) a new lease of life. But what about painting furniture that’s used by children and babies, should this be treated any differently?

Well firstly, there are a number of reasons to paint nursery furniture such as cots and toys, including:

  • Giving personality to new shop-bought furniture
  • Coordinating furniture to fit in with a particular colour scheme
  • As a way of restoring a family piece or pre-loved item
  • To match your child’s favourite colours!

But not all paints are suitable for painting children’s furniture, so it pays to do a little research first. For example, young children and babies tend to put things in their mouths so you need to be certain the coating used is safe for them to do this. One way of being sure is to check a product carries the Safety of Toys Standards (EN71:3) For more information about what this means, take a look at this useful article

Our Eco Chic Claypaint for Furniture and our new Eggshell No.17 are both certified as being safe to use on children’s toys and furniture, carrying this accreditation. See the other products in our range that also comply here

Earthborn baby safe non-toxic paint suitable for children's bedrooms and nurseries is available in 72 colours

Many modern furniture paints also contain high levels of acrylics and vinyl, which although help to make it more hardwearing, aren’t so good for little ones, or indeed the environment. All Earthborn paints are free from oil, acrylic and vinyl and importantly don’t give off any nasty smells or emissions being virtually VOC free too. This is helpful when painting because you don’t have to worry about paint fumes, and also reassuring when used on children’s items.

Another thing to consider is how durable a finish is. Of course, toys are designed to be played with and not just to look good; and the same goes for kid’s items like tables, chairs and cots – they are all subject to a lot of wear and tear! The more durable of our two child-safe paints is Eggshell No.17 because it has a hardwearing soft sheen finish that can be wiped. Eco Chic has a very flat matt finish making it more suitable to less used items. However, finishing Eco Chic with Earthborn Furniture Glaze or Furniture Wax will protect the surface and make it far more hardwearing, and also giving it a different look to Eggshell No.17.

Earthborn Eco Chic is a breathable, thick, creamy paint for furniture. It's safe for children's cots and toys too!

So once you’re happy that your chosen paint is safe and suitable, here’s some handy hints for created the best possible finish:

Preparation!

We believe the key to a successful furniture and toy painting project is preparation, so lightly sand any shiny surfaces or existing coatings to create a matt finish ready to paint. Do this outside if possible, away from children and pets, and always wear a face mask.

To prime or not to prime?

Whilst it isn’t strictly necessary to use a primer when using our Eco Chic Claypaint for Furniture (this can just be diluted on the first coat) it does help when painting with our new Eggshell No.17. Our Multi Purpose Primer will help the paint to stick to the surface and create a longer lasting finish.

Time to paint

Once you’ve chosen which finish is best for your projects (and you have your favourite colours ready!) make sure you follow the instructions on the tin for a successful paint application. As a general guide, our Eggshell No.17 is best applied with a synthetic brush and requires two full coats, whereas Eco Chic is a more versatile paint that can be used to create a smooth finish or a range of effects.

Stenciling is a quick and effective technique that can be used when upcycling furniture. But did you know our Eco Chic is perfect for painting with stencils on wooden furniture? The creamy thick consistency means no chance of bleeding and amazing coverage. Partner this with our extended range of pigments and our easy ‘how to’ guide, you will have everything you need to learn how to paint stencils on wooden furniture!

Pick

Firstly, you will need to pick a stencil. With endless designs out there, you are bound to be spoiled for choice. To help we recommend picking a stencil that isn’t too intricate and that’s reusable. If you choose a card stencil, be sure to recycle this once you’re finished as our Eco Chic is fully biodegradable. Next, you need to pick your project. This may be a piece that you have already upcycled and just looking to add something extra, or maybe you want to spruce up your plain wooden furniture.

Place

Once you have chosen your project, it’s time to place the stencil where you would like to paint it. When choosing, consider placing your stencil in edges, corners or centrally on main features like drawers. Move your stencil in different positions to get a feel before deciding, then once happy secure all edges with frog tape to stop it moving around.

Paint

Painting over your stencils couldn’t be easier with Eco Chic. All you will need is a sample pot (or a few if you’re feeling extra creative) of our Eco Chic in your chosen colour and a synthetic brush. Using a small amount of Eco Chic dab the brush over your stencil, paying extra attention in areas with details. To achieve an ombre effect, introduce a second or third colour and blend together using the same dabbing technique. Once you’re happy that the whole area in the stencil is fully covered, allow it to fully dry before removing the stencil.

Play

Why not add a touch of elegance to your project by using our Mica Gold pigment? Mix Furniture Glaze and a small amount of Pigment and dab over your stencil. Allow to fully dry and remove the stencil revealing a sparkly addition to your project. For a bolder choice why not try our Pigments in colours Ultramarine Violet or Ultramarine Blue? Looking for something a little less daring? Our White Pigment is perfect for achieving a delicate design. Check out our pigments page for more beautiful colours.

One of our most frequently asked questions is how to achieve the antique white look on furniture and beams. Most people want to achieve that beautiful white lime-washed look that allows the natural beauty of the wood to shine through. Typically we advise using our Claypaint watered down ( you can read more about this process here). However, with our Pigment range, there’s a  technique that is super easy and just as beautiful. Also, with 47 shade’s to choose from who says you only need white!

Firstly, make sure your chosen project is ready to paint by prepping and priming, if necessary, you can find more information on these steps in our other blog posts.

Before and after of coat stand sanded and painted with White Pigment water wash technique.

Method 1: Light water wash

Once your surface is prepped you will need to mix a small amount of White Pigment (a little goes a long way) with a cup of water and stir. Using a synthetic brush, apply the paint to bare wood, it may be helpful to apply to a small area first to check you are happy with the opacity. If needed, more pigment or water can be added to increase or dilute the pigment. Before drying, take an old rag and rub along the surface removing some of the excess paint.

Once fully dried, a coat of Furniture Glaze or Furniture Wax should be applied to protect your antique white project from surface dust, grease and oil.

Method 2: Vibrant Furniture Glaze wash

This method is similar, but the thickness of the Furniture Glaze increases the intensity of the Pigment. Start by mixing a small amount of water and Pigment together to form a paste. Once mixed add the Pigment paste to our Furniture Glaze (3 parts glaze to one part paste) and stir until well combined. Using a synthetic brush apply the pigmented Furniture Glaze to your project making sure to apply thinly. For a light wash effect, use a rag to remove off any excess before drying. For a super vibrant piece, why not try Ultramarine Pink, Ultramarine Blue or Ultramarine Violet.

As this process mixes the pigment directly into the glaze there is no need for a protective coat of glaze or wax to be applied.

White and Ultra Marine Pink Pigment with Mica Gold Pigment on metal hooks. Ensure you use our Multi-Surface Primer when applying to metal or mdf.

Two Tone effect

You can achieve this by repeating the same process you followed above but adding a second pigment coat to create a contrast. Ensure you follow the same method when introducing your second pigment. This is because a pigment wash with water will not go over a pigment layer washed with Furniture Glaze.

Alternatively, you can paint your furniture using our Eco Chic paint, just allow time to dry between coats and use pigments directly over the top following one of the above techniques. Once dry use sandpaper to on high point areas which will reveal a contrast for a truly unique piece.

We hope you enjoy experimenting with our Pigments as much as we do. Head over to our blog for more hints and tips on upcycling furniture. Have you used Earthborn in your project? Be sure to tag us in your masterpieces on social media with #Earthbornbyme.

Spring is the perfect time for refreshing and revamping your home. Here at Earthborn we love to upcycle furniture. It’s great for the environment, saves money and the process of creating your own masterpiece happens to be really fun… win win! With our Eco Chic paint, Pigments range and our super easy step by step guides on how to apply furniture paint, you’re seconds away from creating your very own unique piece.

Colour Dragging is an effective look for upcycling furniture and is super easy to do. You can use this technique to mimic metals such as gold or steel by using our Pigments or simply make your item look more rustic using Eco Chic and a brushing technique.

Step 1 Prep:

When upcycling any furniture, the first step is to make sure that you have removed any old varnish, oils and paint. The easiest way to do this is by giving the furniture a good sanding to provide a solid base for paint.

Step 2 Prime:

Eco Chic does not need a primer if painting directly onto wood that has been sanded however it can sometimes be useful to use a base coat of Eco Chic thinned with 20% water. If you are painting over metal or MDF then our Multi-Purpose Primer would be needed before painting.

Step 3 Painting:

With your chosen Eco Chic colour, paint onto your furniture with a synthetic brush making sure not to apply too thickly which can cause drip marks. Although quick drying, allow at least 6 hours before applying a second coat of paint.

Hidey Hole and Mica Gold Pigment on tabletop surface

Step 4: Pigments

To create a brushed metal effect, you will need our Furniture Glaze and one of our metallic pigments such as Rhine Gold, Mica Gold, Mica Bronze or Mica Silver which will add an extra dazzle to your project. Mix a small amount of pigment (a little goes a long way) into a little water to form a paste. Next mix together the pigment paste and Furniture Glaze in a small container using a brush until smooth consistency.

Step 5: Colour Dragging

The fun part! Apply your mixed pigmented Furniture Glaze using short straight strokes alternating in directions. This creates a hatched effect which will catch the light like that of brushed metal. For the best effect we recommend painting a base layer in a dark colour such as Hidey-Hole first to add more contrast against the pigments. Allow to dry for at least 6 hours before applying a clear coat of Furniture Glaze over the top to seal and protect your design.

For a rustic colour drag effect use your chosen Eco Chic colour (we recommend a contrasting colour from your chosen base) and apply thinly using short straight stokes clashing in direction. Continue this process as the paint is drying for the best dragged effect. Once finished, be sure to protect your masterpiece with our Furniture Glaze or Furniture Wax.

Have you tried this project? We would love to see the results! Be sure to tag us in your masterpieces using #Earthbornbyme. If you are keen to get started, why not order your free colour card or buy a sample pot.

After the festivities of Christmas its completely normal to feel blue in January. We are returning to work, waiting for our first payday of the year (which feels like a lifetime away) and the weather seems to be colder, darker and wetter than ever. That’s why January is the perfect month to overhaul your décor and curb those January blues using colours from our Claypaint range ready for the New year ahead.

Warm Colours

Colours freckle and Flower Pot in our Claypaint

Colours freckle and Walls paint in Flower Pot Claypaint

As we are in the middle of winter its easy to picture ourselves somewhere abroad where its bright and sunny. Although we can’t help you get on the next flight to the Maldives, we can certainly help you embrace the daydream all year round with some of our warmer shades of Claypaint.

For a taste of the Mediterranean why not try ‘Freckle‘ or ‘Flower pot‘? Both are distinctively reminiscent of warmer climes and are naturally occurring clay colours that can help bring that summer feeling indoors all year round. If those shades are a bit too daring for you, why not try our Claypaint in shade ‘Little Rascal‘? This beautifully rich beige colour has a softer warm undertone which appears almost biscuity and would be ideal for your living room, hallway, or bedroom.

Fight the blues with blues

Colours puddling and Bo Peep in Claypaint

You know that old saying fight the blues with the blues? No? That’s because there isn’t one but nevertheless there is some truth behind our theory. Blues have a tranquil and calming effect so incorporating this into our home can make for a relaxing environment.

Our palest of blues is ‘Bo Peep’ which is a subtle powdery shade of blue that would be ideal for bedrooms or bathrooms. ‘Polka Dot‘ is an Earthborn favourite that is a nod to the Wedgewood blue making for a super friendly and versatile colour bound to brighten up any room. For the bolder amongst us why not consider ‘Puddling from our Modern Country Colours palette. This is our deepest shade of blue and perfect for those looking to make a dramatic statement.  If you are looking to incorporate blue in your accessories and need a colour that would compliment this why not try ‘Whisker‘. This cool grey shade would be the perfect backdrop to provide a sharp contrast against any blue accents.

Embrace the darkness

Colours Lady Bug and Hidey Hole in Claypaint. Hidey hole has been used with our Crackle.

Although embracing the darkness in an already dark environment sounds counterproductive, it really can be an effective way of creating a cosy nook in your home. ‘Hidey Hole‘ is a charcoal grey and is our darkest shade of Claypaint. When used in the whole room it really helps to create a cosy cocoon feel but if this seems too much of a commitment then try pairing with a soft neutral colour. Another statement colour to consider is ‘Lady Bug‘ which is a shade of claypaint that exudes sophistication and opulence. This colour wouldn’t look out of place in any room and is highly versatile for use in both modern and older interiors.

Whichever colour you choose a revamp is bound to make you feel brighter and happier and help to curb those January blues, even if it’s just the sense of completing a project. We really hope this blog has helped to inspire you, be sure to tag us in your completed projects with #Earthbornbyme.

As 2021 draws to a close you may have thought once or twice about refreshing your home for the new year ahead. If you are unsure where to start or your looking for some inspiration then we are here to help. We have spoken to our in-house colour experts to help you kick start your year with expert advice, useful hints and tips and some beautiful colours to get ahead of the trends for 2022.

Preparation

Colour Specialist Cathryn with Grassy Colour block and sample pots of Bo Peep, Polka Dot and Skipper and Fresh Air

Colour Specialist Cathryn with Grassy Colour block and sample pots of Bo Peep, Polka Dot and Skipper and Fresh Air

When we asked our colour experts what was their number one decorating tip, the most common response was to prep before starting any projects. This could be anything from sanding and masking to calculating paint quantities. Also to make sure you have the right tools before starting any job for example having a short pile roller ready before using our Claypaint. ’…I know this sounds boring but it really does help to save time and give you the best results’ – Cathryn, in house colour expert.

Continuing with the theme of prepping before a project, newbie to Earthborn Michelle, offers advice on the the importance of trying out sample pots first. ‘Sample pots are a fantastic way to get a realistic idea of how a colour can look in your home. Instead of painting a patch on your wall, paint on to an A4 piece of paper and place it in different positions around the room, to get a feel on how the light can change the colour throughout the day’.

Breaking habits of a lifetime

Colour consultant Emily with background Peach Baby and Luke Arthur Wells Bedroom with Flutterby and drawers in Rocky Horse

Veteran colour specialist Emily says gone are the days of painting your ceiling brilliant white, try to see your ceiling as another wall. ‘Consider colours that compliment your wall colour, if your walls are painted in greens then try Fresh Air or Seagull as an alternative to white with flattering green undertones’. Alternatively Emily suggests ‘taking your chosen wall colour on to your ceiling, this useful trick can help rooms with low ceilings appear larger.’

Christina colour consultant offers more practical advice on how paint. ‘When painting most people naturally tend to start in the middle of the wall and fill in edges after. Dont do this as this can cause a picture frame effect on your walls. Instead start off by edging first and feathering the edges into the middle of the wall with your brush before going In with your roller’.

Firm Favourites

Colour Specialist Nina with Pawprint colour block. Joey Kendal Bedroom in Secret room

Colour Specialist Nina with Pawprint colour block and Joey Kendal’s Bedroom makeover in colour Secret room

Asking our colour experts to pick their favourite colours was always going to be difficult, nevertheless we managed to narrow down our Claypaint colours to a few firm favourites.

With the surge of different shades of green colours in 2021 it’s no surprise that Grassy, Gregory’s Den and Hobgoblin made the top of their favourite lists. Nina, colour consultant says ‘The green trend has been popular for a couple of years now due to being versatile and flattering in any room’. With many shades available and no sign of the trend slowing down you’re bound to love these shades of green just as much as we do.

Our colour experts also love keeping it neutral with colours Paw Print and Donkey Ride. Cathryn currently has Donkey Ride in her hallway and loves how the colour can change from a warm beige to a bright beige with grey undertones in lighter rooms. Neutrals never go out of fashion and we can continue to see warm earthy neutrals make their appearance throughout 2022.

Trending for 2022

Upcycled drawers by Design by Daisy using our colour Daisy Chain

Finally we asked our colour experts what do they expect to see trending in 2022 when it comes to interior decor. They have predicted a rise in eco conscious consumers with many looking to repurpose, recycle and reuse products. Instead of purchasing furniture brand new, many people will buy second hand and upcycle furniture themselves. If you are considering an upcycle project in the new year then our Eco Chic range partnered with our Furniture Glaze or Furniture Wax would help you to achieve a perfect finish.

We can expect to see a twist on Neutral colours that are mixed with a subtle pop of colour. We are seeing a rise in demand for colours such as Peach Baby, Cupcake and Lily Lily Rose which are all perfect for injecting a bit of colour into your colour schemes.

With Christmas around the corner, we can’t think of a better way to get in the festive spirit than with some homemade DIY crafts. With sustainability continuing to be a huge focus with more of us recycling and reclaiming than ever. It’s easy to see why experts predict DIY Décor will be a huge trend for Christmas 2021.

Here at Earthborn we have created a how to guide for some super easy crafts featuring our very own Eco Chic . To be bang on trend with your Christmas 2021 DIY décor we suggest burnished berry and neutral shades.

Christmas Twig Tree

Tree using Claypaint in colour Wood smoke to add accents to twigs.

This one is super simple, and it can be used anywhere to bring a bit of festivity to your home. All you need is to collect some sticks on your next walk, try to go for those that are naturally quite straight. Then gather some string or twine and arrange the sticks from smallest to largest so that it creates a shape of a tree, (you may need to trim some of the sticks to make the smaller point). Once you have arranged them you can begin painting the sticks or you may simply wish to keep it natural. After leaving them to dry and you can begin tying twine to each one individually leaving a 1-2 cm gap.

Christmas Pine Cones

Ombre pine cones using Claypaint colours Ladybug, Rosie Posie, Sunday Stroll and Woodsmoke

A fun way to get little ones involved in Christmas crafts is to send them on a hunt for pine cones on your next walk. Once you have your pine cones bring them indoors and leave them near a window so that the sunlight will help them to dry and open right up ready for decorating. You can play around with different painting techniques such as dipping them in paint, brushing the edges for a frosted look and even adding a bit of sparkle with our mica gold pigment.  Leave your pine cones to dry. Then tie some string to the tip to use them as natural baubles on your tree. You could also put them in a bowl to create a festive themed centrepiece for your coffee table or even paint a bottle cap and place them on top to create cute mini trees perfect for name holders.

Festive Wreath

Festive cardboard wreath using Claypaint colour Ladybug and Little Rascal for ribbon

Festive cardboard wreath using Claypaint colour Lady bug and Little Rascal for ribbon

You know those cardboard tubes you get in kitchen roll and toilet roll? Well don’t put them in the recycling bin just yet, they’re perfect for creating eye catching festive wreaths. The fun thing with this is that they can be as simple or elaborate as you like with a whole range of patterns you can play with.

Paint your tubes in your chosen colour or colours and allow to dry. Gently press the tube down so that it is completely flat. Once flattened you then need to cut the tube into strips depending on your chosen thickness, we recommend at least 2cm thick. Arrange the sections of tube into a pattern that comes together to form a circular shape, experiment with different layouts and once happy use some glue to adhere into place. If you wanted, you could repeat the process again with smaller tubes to add an additional layer. Once completed allow to dry and use some string to hang into place.

Most wrapping paper isn’t recyclable because of the inks or foils that are used to make them. By making your own wrapping paper you’re doing your bit in helping the planet. Taking the time to make your own wrapping paper not only adds to the overall gifting experience but you get to have fun too.

You can pick up a brown roll of parcel paper almost anywhere fairly cheaply. Plus it’s perfect for creating that homemade rustic feel. After rolling out the paper you will need to decide on a design, we recommend sticking with simple shapes so it’s easier to repeat. Using our Claypaint you can paint directly onto the paper with a fine brush, repeating the drawing until you’re happy. Alternatively, you could apply a thin layer of our paint onto a stamp and press it onto the paper which will give you a clean uniform design.

Once your loved ones have finished opening your presents, your wrapping paper can go straight into recycling as our paint is fully bio degradable!

Sometimes a fresh coat of paint is all that’s needed to add a totally new look to kitchen cupboards and furniture. Our Eggshell No. 17 and Eco Chic are perfect for painting interior woodwork and wooden furniture. But if you’re planning to paint melamine and MDF surfaces, they’ll require a little more preparation.

It’s worth bearing in mind that many kitchen units are now made from composite materials like MDF or particleboard and coated with a laminated wood, plastic or a melamine finish. Likewise, a lot of furniture (especially the flat pack variety!) is made from coated MDF or chipboard.

Preparing MDF and laminate furniture for painting

Preparation is key when it comes to painting these types of surfaces. So if you’re planning on painting kitchen cupboards, melamine surfaces or particleboard furniture, read on for our top tips to achieve a professional, long-lasting finish:

  1. 1. Where possible remove handles, hinges and hardware before painting, or mask any areas you don’t want to paint.
  2. 2. Repair cracks or holes with a strong wood filler, let it dry thoroughly then sand smooth.
  3. 3. Melamine and foil-coated particleboard isn’t absorbent like wood or plaster. So to provide a key and help the paint stick, it’s important to sand the entire surface to a matt finish. Don’t forget to wear a suitable mask when sanding and work in a well-ventilated area… or outside if possible!
  4. 4. Vacuum and wipe away any excess dust. Then thoroughly clean the surface with a damp cloth .
  5. 5. We’d always recommend priming these types of surfaces first – our water based Multi Purpose Primer is ideal!
  6. 6. Earthborn Multi Purpose Primer isn’t like a normal paint. It has a semi opaque finish, so don’t be surprised if it doesn’t appear to fully cover the surface. The point is to prepare the area and give the paint something to stick to.

Once you’ve prepared and primed all your surfaces, you’re ready for the fun part… painting!

We’d recommend using either our Eggshell No.17 or Eco Chic paint finishes. Both are Toy Safety approved, virutally VOC free and can be applied by brush, roller or spray.

Earthborn Eggshell No. 17 dries to a durable, soft sheen and doesn’t require any extra protective finishing. Simply apply 2-3 coats of Eggshell No. 17, allowing each coat to dry thoroughly. For an ultra-smooth finish, lightly sand the dried surface in between coats with fine sandpaper before applying the next coat.

Earthborn Eco Chic is a thick and creamy clay based paint that gives a more ‘hand finished’ look. Again apply at least two coats, and finish with our clear Furniture Glaze or soft Furniture Wax for extra protection. Then leave to dry thoroughly before re-attaching doors or adding handles.

Earthborn Furniture Glazed will protect MDF and melamine painted surfaces

It will take up to 10 days for our paints and other finishes to fully cure, so wipe away any marks or spills carefully during this time until the paint is fully hardened.

At Earthborn we believe that painting and upcycling furniture is more than just a ‘passing trend’. Updating a second-hand piece is not only a great way of making a more sustainable choice at home, but painting furniture is also one of the simplest ways to inject colour and personality into a room. Creating something that is totally unique to you.  Follow our easy steps to upcycle your own piece of furniture.

Step 1.

Choose your colour: Our Eco Chic Furniture paint is available in 84 signature shades.

Step 2.

(Optional) apply our Crackle using the instructions and tips below:

Earthborn Crackle is an easy to use, water based and acrylic free medium, perfect for those who like to experiment with unusual paint effects by adding an authentic, textured look to vintage furniture. Use on flat surfaces such as wardrobe doors or tabletops to create drama. Or on smaller areas like chair legs or in carved details to enhance subtle ageing. The crackle patina lends itself not just to an antique look but can also give a fresh twist to contemporary styles of décor.

Here’s how to create an aged or antique effect on painted furniture using Earthborn Crackle:

      • Prepare your furniture for painting and apply a coat of Eco Chic
      • When the paint is dry, apply a coat of Earthborn Crackle.
      • Allow a little time for it to dry.
      • Apply a contrasting coat of Earthborn Eco Chic at right angles to the Crackle using smooth, deliberate brush strokes. Take care not to ‘over brush’ any areas where Eco Chic has already been applied.
      • Use a hairdryer to enhance the cracking effect.
      • Create even more ageing by sanding all the ‘high points’ and revealing the colour underneath.
      • Finish with Earthborn Furniture Glaze or Furniture Wax.
      • Simply wash brushes in warm water.

Step 3.

Choose from Furniture Glaze or Furniture Wax to finish transforming any tired piece of furniture into a masterpiece.

Earthborn Furniture Glaze is a water-based, clear glaze designed to protect painted pieces from everyday use. Introduced as an alternative to our soft, clear Furniture Wax, Earthborn Furniture Glaze offers a higher level of protection making it ideal for busy family life. For use over natural wood or Eco Chic, it offers a durable, wipeable finish that repels dust and is especially perfect as a topcoat for Crackle effects. As a non-yellowing clear solution, it’s easy to apply and dries to a soft sheen finish.

Earthborn Furniture Wax is a clear buttery soft and water resistant wax that provides a protective satin finish to interior wood surfaces. It can also be used over  Eco Chic to produce a durable and decorative effect on furniture. Waxed surfaces will remain breathable, protected and maintained, repelling water, dust and grease.
